For those with big wings : a Chinese fairytale for when you feel like quitting

Within the Chinese lunar calendar, a brand new 12 year cycle has begun today, with the celebration of New Year (7th Feb 2008). Expect to see a renewed surge of trades and strong moves from China this year.
The Year of the Rat is considered very auspicious for wealth, shrewd business dealings, love, family and general prosperity.

Whether merely due to placebo effect or common consciousness; for a culture steeped in (what we deem to be) superstition, the sheer volume of subconscious belief is predicted to have groundswell effect on an already burgeoning economy, as more risks and new business have been awaiting the turn into the new cycle.

If ever there was a nation that embodied endurance, it has to be the China, whose people have no fear of 100 year + plans. Those that stretch far beyond individual lives. And it appears that their strategy has worked, with the unstoppable exponential capacity to increasingly dominate the world on their terms; all without a war. Clearly they were reading their Sun Tzu.

In honour of Chinese culture, and this month’s theme of endurance, I’d love to share one of my favourite fairytales (as retold by Chin Ning Chu)

new year's morning 01.01.08 In the North Sea of China, the legend says, “there is a fish called Kun which is thousands of metres long. This great fish evolves into a bird called Pung. Pung also measures thousands of metres long. Swooping as he flies, his wings expand like the clouds covering the sky, Pung flies over the great sea southward to his destination: the Celestial Pool.

“The great Pung flies toward the South Sea, beating the water with his majestic wings for over three thousand kilometres; but first he spins the wind into a tornado that rises to a height of ninety thousand kilometres. It takes six months to reach such a height; only then is the Pung bird ready.

Now with the Pung’s back against the pure blue sky and nothing blocking it, the Pung can set upon his course southward with no obstacles. How can one compare such magnitude with the morning mists, the dust, or the insignificant creatures?

If the water is not deep, it cannot support a large ship; but empty a cup of water on the shallow floor, and a straw can float like a boat. If you place a cup there, it will sink. In the same way, if the wind is not sufficient, it cannot support huge wings. Only at a height of ninety thousand kilometres is there enough space to support the Pung. So the Pung can finally begin his great journey.”

So it is with many who are here to do great works.
Keep going. Never surrender (thank you Mr Churchill)

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.” - Thomas Edison, a master of success through unwavering endurance.

Wherever you need it in your life right now, and we all need the formidable fuel of tenacity in some aspect of our lives.. I wish you the strength of staying power. And perhaps a little re.New Year’s (and fresh 12year cycle of new energy) wish. Just maybe the Chinese aren’t wrong about this one.

PS. this pic is from New Year here in Cape Town 01.01.08 the first sunrise at the tip of Africa.. the story of Pung blazed into life for me again. May it pop into your head when you most need it too.
Never surrender.

Linkbaiting 101 for politicians

Has Patricia de Lille been to dinner with David Bullard lately?!..perhaps they share the same online reputation management consultant or social media PR specialist?

Thanks 2 Martin for the heads.up this morning. We all had a good laugh and my optimism in the sporadic sophistication of South African politics leads me to believe that this is just effective online marketing at work. Hope Dave doesn’t have National Intelligence on his ass by giving political opinion though if this IS serious. Either way, Paul needs help us get clear on our rights, quickly. I’ve been saying we need to get involved in policy-making if we are to guarantee our rights, or what freedom we enjoy may be a window.

If this isn’t a blogging blast-in, then it’s another tragic display of fear.based rallying. I think we may have a fresh entrant in the social media playground.. especially leading up to elections. Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama of course, and the newmedia star John Edwards make extensive use of social media tools like blogs, twitter, youtube or myspace to connect with constituents, even rustling up raving fans to crowdsource events on a 100th of the traditional cost of campaigning.. who would NOT want to leverage this advantage?

Somehow, I just don’t see a case of digital denial* here (honestly how long did you think it would take our sharpest politico’s to catch-up when the results are so potent for their PR?)

PS. *if this is the case I’m available for the guided tour if you need to map the territory quickly
PPS. Mxit may be one of the greatest tools for us to leapfrog the crisis in education, using lightweight technology to support collaborative future learning environments. Like any powertool.. the capacity to build or destroy is in the hands of those using it. [Again, on matters of emerging technology as an accelerated means to use your powers for good.. I'm available to any political leader brave enough to include tech into their strategic vision, ..rather than a reactive rallying point for those fearful of the future].

B’School course for Executives in Web2.0

Dave Duarte (the Marketing Geek) announced the brand new course that we’re producing (thrilling!) for UCT’s Graduate School of Business
- Nomadic Marketing - scheduled 17 - 19 JulyUniversity of Cape Town
uctgsb1.jpg

This 3day executive course will focus on marketing strategy that embraces leading-edge technology. By now even those deep in digital denial have had to pay attention to the economic and social impact of the internet and mobile technologies. The course is geared as an immersive introduction with real world case studies, and practical application that you don’t have to be a geek to get! Certification included.

For us the pressure is on to craft a program of world-class quality to live up to UCT’s Graduate School of Business’ impressive stature. They have consistently ranked as one of the Global Top 100 MBA programs by the Financial Times. More appropriately for us though: in the Top 10 for Executive Education internationally! The challenge is energising.

Brain-based learning practices will be built in to more effortlessly enjoy the intensity of the course (without the overwhelm that would otherwise accompany this volume of knowledge). If you ever thought academia was dry and theoretical, you are in for an invigorating surprise.

Naturally we’ll be putting up a blog to get feedback and suggestions from you, to shape and clarify the syllabus. It will also offer introductions to some of the leading thinkers who will be contributing their knowledge.
[In the meantime we can confirm that mover and shaker in the SA web2.0 space Mike Stopforth is charging in to set the keynote. There'll be an economist, a futurist, podcasters, bloggers, respected marketers, pioneers and proponents of the new enterprise space who will lend their heft].

PS. you know Dave & I can’t resist community-building fun - so to ensure some solid edutainment - there’ll be an celebratory afterparty where you’ll be able to network with fellow course delegates; and also have the opportunity to connect with some of the bright & visionary technologists we respect
.. it’s not called social media for nothing.

It’s been coming.. time to play indoors again

What does it take for Scoble to stop blogging for a week?

The rate of change has accelerated to the point where we’ve come to a critical inflection point. Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer spoke of three stages of truth:

  1. it is ridiculed
  2. it is violently opposed
  3. it is seen as self-evident.

Blogging and social media has been teetering at the tipping point of the ridicule phase. Everyone has laughed/cringed at the absurdity of “blog” ..I spotted a tweet (twitter post) come through from Twitter founder Evan Williams reinforcing the idea :

ev.jpg

as an academic the crux of formidable social and economic disruption can’t be seen to have such a ridiculous name! Bloody hell, best to head back to the safety of weblog. Earlier today in the Financial Times: “YouTube was funny until it was worth $1.65bn to someone

Google.YouTube vs Myspace

Take the ringside seat as the billion $$ behemoths battle it out.
Such fun! our very own pantheon of the gods.
Those who hold sway in this peculiar parallel dimension of online reality, do so by sheer weight of those who believe in them.. (in Google we trust). Once again the big boys are out to play. The brave young hero YouTube has been deified and given a seat on Mount Olympus.. and the writhing shape-shifting adolescent-hormone fueled MySpace is getting edgy. oooh too delicious.

We’ll be sure not to myth out on the next installment: soap-opera for geeks and market-analysts alike, as we all try to predict the next move and extrapolate what cool.tool gifts the benign ones will bless us with tomorrow..

This is one of those moments where you realise that we’re oddly tracking toward the outer edges of capitalism, where peculiarly, in it’s full bloom: with the means of production truly in the hands of the people: it starts looking a lot like true socialism -? without the crappy cumbersome side effects of poverty, scarcity and shocking food that tends to accompany communism.

Hmm.. wonder how my mind wondered off here, anyway, just a thought and perhaps a little hint to the leaders of our beloved South Africa that it’s worth holding the evolving and devolving models from the economic experiments conducted in other countries - side by side - and extract some wisdom thereby. Anyway as I was saying, just a thought.

factoring pretty girls into economic forecasts

For those of you who didn’t believe me the other night at Toastmasters >> you thought I was just being silly: but NO!

In the interests of ensuring that we get a clearer understanding of the economic and social determinants that drive our future, we sometimes need to pay attention to peculiar and surprising forces that skew the trends and introduce randomness and seeming chaos to financial markets, or bewilder political analysts.

I was being utterly serious: pretty ladies are indeed a hazard to sane & rational thought processes.. in men. Women it seems are blissfully exempt from going goofy no matter what the fellow looks like (yippee secret weapon for the ladies ;-) with built-in immunity)

Here’s the proof: from New Scientist . Beautiful women “scramble men’s ability to assess the future”.. The experiment is the grown-up version of the Marshmallow Test.
The prolific adaption of this within marketing or sales is a very old cliche : sex sells : if you want men to make big heroic or potentially hazardous leaps of faith then derail their sensible long-term orientated thinking (mmm.. suddenly I understand why particularly strategic negotiators will use stripclubs to their almost unfair advantage). So whether it’s buying an “investment” car or investing large sums of money (ever find it odd that Investec hire so many beautiful women?!), engaging in battle or negotiating a big deal - short-circuiting the initial decision with lovely ladies around could be just the tipping point you need.

ASK and ye shall receive

Fed on fairytales, with all life’s occassionally brutal and unfair edges polished off, can lead to rampant rages against whoever happens to be in charge of the Universal Luck Lotto.

“BUT IT’S JUST NOT FAIR!!” We howl in impotent fury >> How come the rich get richer, good people suffer, innocent children starve while warlords live a fat lifestyle? Why do good things happen to bad people? (yes, I meant it that way around). In your industry, is it the most talented/ big-hearted/ best-educated/ super-smart/ ethical people who take all the prizes? Yes? In a perfect world maybe! But in the real world, riches and recognition seem to amass around the AUDACIOUS It’s not as though we haven’t been warned that this is the way “luck” is dished out :: The parable of the talents was one that utterly confounded me at school and seemed to be completely unfair (mind you I went to a convent-school run by the Sisters of Mercy, so I have been steeped in many years of peculiar thought, but that’s a story for another day). Steve Pavlina has a kicker blog.post about this that I recommend you tootle over & visit.

Every one of us has more than one story that illustrates that life rewards those are already lucky. So why carry on fighting the system??

Being audacious and hustling vapourware has never been something I could settle into my operating system with ease. But being unafraid to ask for what you want is just as potent // The principle of ballsiness can be applied with a clear conscience & clean hands // The terror of asking for a favour, or for help can often cause paralysis until the opportunity gap has passed.

A psychology experiment locked itself into my memory from the deepest haze of first year university. It involved the behavioural genius Stanley Milgram telling his students to go out and ASK for seats on the New York Subway! (1975), a quest that stressed many of them to the point of nausea and immobility.. the results may startle and perhaps inspire you - 68% of those asked to, duly gave up their seats! (The experiment was repeated this year to a result of 87% giving up their seats).

Be brave - what’s the worst that could happen if you just ASK? My mate Lior specializes in helping Olympic athletes reach way beyond their current beliefs to winning gold, by developing CHUTZPAH or in his words - for those not born with the DNA - to unleash their inner Jew! I am LEARNING 8-) We have entered the Connection Economy: our interconnectedness on a global scale has never been more evident.. and the barriers to speaking to those greatest among us has never been easier.

If you have a great idea, share it, speak up, start to ASK.. who knows how lucky you could get if you do?!

So the essence is :: I thoroughly recommend taking delight the dizzying thrill of the bravado we had as children before we weren’t held down by suffocating “shoulds” and polite political correctness that keep us from playing in this wildly abundant world that is our birthright
