Crowdsourcing a new identity : for a city

Cape Town, exquisite little city at the tiptoe of the tumultous African continent, is home to some of the most interesting people I’ve had the honour of meeting.
[If you happen to live here too, find yourself understimulated, and assume there's no depth here - uh oh! have you been MISSING OUT - we may be poorly connected not poor culturally. As a community developer & networther I would LOVE to get you connecting dots with some of the powerful, passionate people here : connect in & tap into some underground genius // & share some of yours?!]

go see more of our gorgeous city - thanks to coda

One of the geniuses I celebrated recently on SA Rocks, has joined forces with another ..and finally launched Accelerate Cape Town into the digital playground. Congrat’s Guy!

In the interests of getting the conversation started around re.creating our city the Web AddiCTs have a fun competition for imagineers: My Perfect City Challenge.

I remember reading about one of the Ivy League schools (possibly Harvard) putting out a similar challenge and getting wild wacky AND workable solutions that were successfully implemented. Environmental and human.scale factors featured prominently. But unlike the polite community of a university town.. our city jostles between 1st and 3rd world : ideas, attitudes, infrastructure, cultures that don’t mix easily - a little like oil and water - fairly benign until things start hotting up and then it starts fizzing and spitting ..suddenly it seems like a terribly sensible idea to get the hell out of the kitchen. Which sadly catalyses a dreaded brain.drain.

Fortunately, many volatility-tolerant social entrepreneurial types stayed behind to grab the opportunity to make a difference and a good living. Some helped build bridges between the techies and the marketers (Mike, I know you are a good capitalist, the fact that you do good en route doesn’t make you a flaky philanthropist :-P). Some proactively filling in the gaps where the city fell dismally short on the basics. There are SO many stories of people doing good here : SA Rocks celebrates them, Greater Good SA, SA the Good News among many others. We yearn to be helpful no matter where we find ourselves in the world.

Frankly, though we all think that we need better infrastructure to even begin, that the odds are stacked against us at the bottom of Africa, none of this matters when you have a determined, visionary group of brave people. I remind you of the words of anthropologist Margaret Mead

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”

Inspiring visionaries can turn a city’s destiny and self-esteem around. Of course Guiliani’s incredible re.vision of New York comes to mind. But for South Africa, may I suggest we look to someone who had to deal with conditions akin to ours for guidance. Jaime Lerner is an inspired urban warrior, Lerner in action at TEDarchitect, mayor and Brazilian senator, a genius who transformed one of Brazil’s capital cities, Curitiba, into one of the most respected and modelled cities in the world for its efficiency, environmental and resource management and generally happy place to live and feel human1. Read a little about what life is like in Curitiba for inspiration if you’re entering the competition.. (you can win even if you don’t live in Cape Town BTW, just submit what you think would make a perfect city for you - wherever you are)

Fast Company did a feature on the World’s fastest cities 2007 (Curitiba’s there, Jo’burg there - Cape Town not yet!). Feeling some fighting spirit kicking in there. So all you brilliant marketers, greenies, architects, designers, techies I know & love >> let’s flex a little creative muscle and re.vision, re.brand & re.create a city, just for kicks.

(I’m keen for hitting the Creative Class Meccas category or Urban Innovators class? Madam Mayor what say you?)

Creativity comes when you cut a zero from your budget
- Jaime Lerner

Event: Geekdinner. GardenRoute. George. Goodie!

geekdinner It’s so wacky how our world has changed! My mom mailed me today to remind me politely that I haven’t blogged here in 10 days :-/ ..kind of like those subtle suggestions that it may be advisable to tidy your room before guests arrive when you’re a kid.

Does it mean that our relationships are any less close with friends & family if we connect with each other through facebook, IM, twitter? I may be wrong, but from what I’ve seen, I think Facebook for one should be held responsible for a huge resurgence of global love. All this reconnecting with lost buddies; getting a deeper sense of our friend’s quirky characters through their odd status messages, the groups they join/start, stream of photos from their adventures, films they love.. and for those of us who are crap at remembering birthdays, we need never fear the stony silence again!! the joy the joy :)

I’m a happy little digital native and spend a huge amount of time talking paranoid people out of the trees of terror when they’re presented with new technology. Yes, there are still people who have never heard of a blog. These self.same people denounce technology as the devil of our time and the reason for the sordid state of our planet; but haven’t been around to say hi to the next-door neighbour on the other side of the 8foot wall keeping them safely separate. [LOL - better catch myself quickly so this won't be another technology is neutral punt] Continue reading ‘Event: Geekdinner. GardenRoute. George. Goodie!’

Monogamy not an option for web entrepreneurs

http://www.extreme-hotels.com/Speed dating for entrepreneurs in the gorgeous little Mother City* last night >> zoomed into the ubersexy Extreme Hotel for about 28.3nanoseconds >>

because I couldn’t bear to be left out of at least a little of the fun at the new OpenCoffeeClubopencoffee.jpg
South Africa’s first - started in London by powerhouse Saul Klein. Introduced to our shores by Eric Entrepreneur Edelstein.

Speed dating yields the quick & dirty blink instinct assessment. Maybe not perfect for business, but a whole lot more invigorating than the usual networking rounds of intro’s & pitches. For accelerated times it’s a relief to have the room moving at the same pace as you are. I didn’t have time for much more because I had to dash to a Toastmasters session. Not that there were all that many faces I didn’t recognise, all the usual suspects were in the house

… but I believe this one’s going to grow wildly and attract many more bravehearted entreneurs & serial start-up pioneers as 27 has.

Vinny Lingham’s right, in many ways this feels just like web1.0 .. the etherware salemen are shining their shoes and confuddling those who are in the rising panic that they’ll be left behind. [Even if the fundamentals don't bear out fair value in the financials, the big numbers have a gravitational force that equally defies scientific understanding].Hmm.. but we learnt a great deal the first time. And I am determined not to burn out another set of adrenals this time. South Africa has some lag time on the global upsurge but we’re in for a fun ride.

What in the world has this got to do with monogamy? If you happen to be one of the usual suspects at these kind of events anywhere in the world right now, you’ll know exactly what I mean. This is our lifestyle. A serious case of work ADD.

Chris Brogan did a post about this that I giggled at in complete recognition and realised that almost everyone I know has the same quirk. We new media types HAVE to have our fingers in multiple project pies, simultaneously.

We’re meeting, sparking, creating, conceptualising and innovating at a blur of speed that commitment to just one project is a foreign concept. Sound familiar?

As you read this how many projects do YOU have an interest in right now?

*(motherless for some I hear after the free drinks generously laid on by Vinny the VC and Anton Gillis).

B’School course for Executives in Web2.0

Dave Duarte (the Marketing Geek) announced the brand new course that we’re producing (thrilling!) for UCT’s Graduate School of Business
- Nomadic Marketing - scheduled 17 - 19 JulyUniversity of Cape Town
uctgsb1.jpg

This 3day executive course will focus on marketing strategy that embraces leading-edge technology. By now even those deep in digital denial have had to pay attention to the economic and social impact of the internet and mobile technologies. The course is geared as an immersive introduction with real world case studies, and practical application that you don’t have to be a geek to get! Certification included.

For us the pressure is on to craft a program of world-class quality to live up to UCT’s Graduate School of Business’ impressive stature. They have consistently ranked as one of the Global Top 100 MBA programs by the Financial Times. More appropriately for us though: in the Top 10 for Executive Education internationally! The challenge is energising.

Brain-based learning practices will be built in to more effortlessly enjoy the intensity of the course (without the overwhelm that would otherwise accompany this volume of knowledge). If you ever thought academia was dry and theoretical, you are in for an invigorating surprise.

Naturally we’ll be putting up a blog to get feedback and suggestions from you, to shape and clarify the syllabus. It will also offer introductions to some of the leading thinkers who will be contributing their knowledge.
[In the meantime we can confirm that mover and shaker in the SA web2.0 space Mike Stopforth is charging in to set the keynote. There'll be an economist, a futurist, podcasters, bloggers, respected marketers, pioneers and proponents of the new enterprise space who will lend their heft].

PS. you know Dave & I can’t resist community-building fun - so to ensure some solid edutainment - there’ll be an celebratory afterparty where you’ll be able to network with fellow course delegates; and also have the opportunity to connect with some of the bright & visionary technologists we respect
.. it’s not called social media for nothing.

In Celebration of an Inspiration

So Close : SA’s Best Blogger : by Far

We all know by now the yummymummy Tertia has taken the award for Best South African Blog :) There is none more deserving than this brave, bright & beautiful blogger. Her blog is formidably successful; but the real prize is the hard-won success that spills over in all directions and powers up other’s courage to deal with life’s gritty and seriously crap bits with huge dollops of grace.

There’s a little more than the standard warm fuzzies in this story >> It’s been a wild ride for Tertia lately and instead of crashing, she chose to use the power of participation on her blog to change the fortunes of a family. She’s raised hopes and a house for Harrison in 12hours flat. Check it out, and see if you don’t get all inspired to craft a creative campaign to use YOUR powers for good!

Fortune favours the brave: her book So Close has also been shortlisted in the books-spawned-from-blogs Blooker Awards with the likes of Seth Godin’s “Small is the New Big” and powerblog Postsecret as running mates - and judges with the stature of Arianna Huffington. It’s no small honour.

Tertia’s blog and book have changed many lives in many different & unexpected ways.. it’s a Hero’s Journey in the classic sense and farking funny to boot. No infertility of talent in evidence. Good job T, we’re so proud of you.

It’s been coming.. time to play indoors again

What does it take for Scoble to stop blogging for a week?

The rate of change has accelerated to the point where we’ve come to a critical inflection point. Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer spoke of three stages of truth:

  1. it is ridiculed
  2. it is violently opposed
  3. it is seen as self-evident.

Blogging and social media has been teetering at the tipping point of the ridicule phase. Everyone has laughed/cringed at the absurdity of “blog” ..I spotted a tweet (twitter post) come through from Twitter founder Evan Williams reinforcing the idea :

ev.jpg

as an academic the crux of formidable social and economic disruption can’t be seen to have such a ridiculous name! Bloody hell, best to head back to the safety of weblog. Earlier today in the Financial Times: “YouTube was funny until it was worth $1.65bn to someone

the geek shall inherit ..the GeekDinner

Geekdinner 2.0 (I know I know, it’s so difficult to resist) is reloaded & ready to go >> I’m not organising this one, it’s in the logistically-gifted hands of Joe Botha of Frogfoot this time. And it’s looking pretty swanky, all kitted out at Barbarella’s in the heart of sophisticado style in Constantia.

I’ll be up front & centre at some stage getting geekdiners to wrap their heads around “What Makes Geeks Hot” - em, hot property that is - & what we need to do to support & nurture our talent here in South Africa. I have been contemplating flipping it & sharing my freshest social media wonderland discoveries.. esp. Twitter. I’ll see what’s gonna be most valuable on the night.

If you’re a power user you’ll want to be here to see what’s evolving at the edge and if you’re a developer this is the place to come & show off your projects!

It’s gonna be deep boys & girls: so make sure you get in some cerebral yoga ahead of the sparky synaptic crackle & pop this Thursday Wednesday. Are you a geek, who coincidentally happens to be in Cape Town this Thursday Wednesday, 28 March? - then get thy geekly self to the wiki posthaste >> gijima wena!!

.. the cool kids at play

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g3m1squogs]

.. just in case you needed convincing :-P to get your ass to one of our dinners

PS. if you’re a new kid on the blog, no matter where you find yourself on the planet, brace yourself, once you fire it up, whether personal or business .. blogs change lives unquestionably (and I believe will shift the global economy in ways unimagined too - watch the fractal pattern throughout history: culture precedes commerce). Get connected to others exploring the edge >> in your neighbourhood

SA Blog Awards shock! sitting at the table with the cool kids

..how I did it, I’m not sure (on my pretty but decidedly malnourished site, starved of attention & daily feeds) but the Hunter of Genius made it through to the final of the SA Blog Awards?!

Standing shoulder to shoulder with the legendary ZAblogging iconTertia, the muscular supercharged Stopforth blog, the clearly well-fed ElectricSpaghetti and Peas on Toast, the one all the girls will be voting for: KykNoord, butt-ugly but potent 2OceansVibe that swept it all up last year again, the wildy popular Muso, TrashMedia that comes preloaded with their own merchandise!.. and then hey.. the low profile geek-girl sitting at the table with all the beautiful people. (thank you voting-angels xx)

Popularity contests don’t exactly get my stoic self quivering with delight - I’m far too stern & serious for such flimsy excuses to wiggle your wares.

Hunter/Gatherer of Genius that is..

There are two fronts at which I work as a hunter of genius:
1st the individual - to discover, develop and define the vision of the visionary so they can apply their genius in the world.
Too many brilliant ones find themselves frustrated and working at a fraction of their capacity; or worse yet, surrender to being cubicle slaves (even if the handcuffs are platinum). If you’re particularly gifted the rewards can be so much sweeter than could be expected of common existence; but the hero’s journey to get there, to birth your vision into reality, requires irrational optimism, often ferocious detemination, a bloody good sense of humour and a clarity that sees you through cynicism, challenge and the perennial offers to take the easier route (ie. choosing Life Lite).

Going this route alone is what wears most genius-types down. Risk is not as risky when taken with others braving their all, sometimes betting finances, family, looking foolish. Why test the edge when the safe ground has been proven stable?
Some people just don’t have a choice, the compulsion to explore, experiment and dare is deep-infused into their entrepreneurial blood. I believe and have empirical evidence that absolutely supports that genius begets genius. It statistically outclasses genetics or formal education.

Put bright people together and let them play, socialise, debate, create, compete and very soon a culture of exceptional quality grows, and starts to attract more of these high calibre beings effortlessly! Silicon Valley is a case in point.
So you guessed it: the 2nd aspect is being a gatherer of genius.
Creating collectives of the talented, group genius. Developing culture in which fiercely independent and wild beings can connect with others to create & work on daring projects together. Explorers Societies of our age.
